Through a series of twists of fate and personal connections, Building Healthcare for Humanity was formed. Gerry Puchlik, founding partner of Puchlik Design Associates, Inc. - a healthcare architecture firm based in Pasadena, CA - was asked if he would be interested in providing design input on a teaching hospital in Shashemene, Ethiopia. Gerry was enthusiastic about the opportunity and he involved his partner, Bruce Macpherson, and managing director, Melinda Lehman, in the project. After the first visit to Ethiopia to tour various healthcare and visit the project site, the three were inspired to create Building Healthcare for Humanity, a foundation dedicated to improving healthcare facilities in low resource regions and providing education in medical planning and design & construction of healthcare facilities.
