Shelter Children's Center
Excitement is building for our new project—assisting a partner foundation, Discover the World, improve one of their existing orphanages located outside of Nairobi, Kenya. The Shelter Children’s Center provides housing and education for at-risk young boys and girls.
Building Healthcare for Humanity is raising funds to assist in the design and construction of a much needed clinic that will serve the orphanage as well as the surrounding communities. Additionally, improvements will be provided for the aging dorms and structures.
Sustainability is a top priority for construction, operation and maintenance.
Thanks to all who gave generous donations at our Wine for Change fundraiser last year. Your gifts helped fund Melinda’s first trip to Shelter Children’s Center in early November. It was an extremely productive visit.
Accompanying Melinda on the trip were Rev. Dr. Doug Millham, President of Discover the World and two of their Directors (Sponsorship and Finance). The group spent four very full days with the Shelter Children’s Center team conducting workshops and touring their facilities, nearby orphanages, clinics, and hospitals.
Half a day was spent touring the grounds and facilities. The level of sustainable practices already being implemented (out of necessity) is impressive, including bio-fuel and using the fish pond water to fertilize strawberries. However, there are some clear and urgent needs, including on-site clinic facilities, adequate lighting and electricity, and adequate hot water for showers.
